MeteoGust is a wind app for water sports, made in Latvia by Andrejs Semjonovs (“we”). This page says what the app keeps about you, why, and what you can do about it. Questions: hello@meteogust.com.
Your account
You can look around MeteoGust without an account. To save your spots and alerts you sign in with Apple, with Google, or with your email and a one-time code (no passwords). We keep:
- Your name (first and last): seen only by the MeteoGust team, for support and to know who reports come from.
- Your nickname and optional photo: shown to other riders with what you share (spots, descriptions, photos, reports).
- Your email address, if you sign in with email or Google, or Apple shares it (Apple can give us a private relay address instead). We use it only to sign you in and, rarely, to answer you. We send no newsletters.
- Your Apple or Google account identifier, to recognise you when you sign in again.
- Your devices: a random ID the app creates, the phone model, the app version and your country (worked out from your connection, not your location), and when each was last used. With them comes your role (which features you have).
What you share
Spots you share, descriptions and suggestions you send, and photos you add are kept with your nickname. Public ones are seen by other riders after we review them; photos are credited with your nickname.
Feedback you send from the app (its topic, your words, the pictures and video you add, and the app's build, your phone's model and iOS or Android version, the screen and spot you were on) goes only to us, to fix and improve the app. Its pictures and video are stored encrypted. We keep it for up to 6 months; if you're signed in, we may answer you by email.
Your setup
When you're signed in, your setup is kept with your account, so it follows you to another phone or a new install: what you use the app for, your spots and their order, your stations, your weather places (their names and positions), your own spots (private ones too, seen only by you), your alert settings and your preferences (units, riding settings, colours, the forecast's rows, the map's look). It is deleted with your account. Without an account it stays on your phone.
What stays on your phone
Your location is used on the phone (nearest spots, the weather where you are, the map) and not sent to us, except for rain alerts as below.
Rain and wind alerts
Alerts come from our service as notifications, so they arrive with the app closed. For that, while you have alerts on, the app sends our service:
- For rain alerts: the places you turned them on for (their name and position), your time zone, quiet hours and alert settings. For My location, the position where you last opened the app; on an iPhone with location set to Always, also new positions after bigger moves (about 500 m; iOS notices them from mobile and Wi-Fi networks, there is no GPS tracking).
- For wind alerts: the spot, its station and your wind limits; for Tomorrow, also your star winds, the spot's kiteable and best directions and your own model weights, so our service can check tomorrow's forecast at 18:00.
- A notification token from Apple (iPhone) or from Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging (Android), so they can deliver the alert to your phone, and the app's random device ID.
We use these only to check the radar or the station and send your alerts. They are deleted when you turn the alerts off, and when Apple or Google tells us the app is gone from the phone. A short record of each alert sent (time, place name, whether it was delivered) is kept for 7 days to see that alerts work.
Crash reports
When the app crashes or the system closes it, it sends us the technical report: Apple's diagnostic report on an iPhone, on Android the reason and the trace the system gives, with the app's build, the phone model, the system version and the app's random device ID. No personal data is in them. We use them only to fix the app and keep them for 30 days.
Weather data
To show forecasts and maps the app asks our own service for data about spot positions, and the maps load their base map and pictures from map services; on Android, the spot editor's satellite map comes from Google Maps. Like any website, they see your IP address with each request; they get no account data from us.
Who helps us
- Cloudflare hosts our service, its database and files, and receives our email (EU and worldwide data centres).
- Resend sends the sign-in code emails.
- Apple and Google handle “Sign in with Apple” and “Sign in with Google” under their own privacy policies. Apple delivers the iPhone app (TestFlight, App Store) and its alerts (Apple Push Notification service); Google delivers the Android app (Google Play) and its alerts (Firebase Cloud Messaging).
We use no advertising, no tracking or analytics tools, and we never sell or rent your data.
How long we keep it
Your account data stays until you delete your account. Sign-in codes expire after 10 minutes. When you delete your account, your name, email, photo, sign-in links and device list are deleted at once; public spots you shared stay, without your nickname.
Your rights
You can see and change your name, nickname and photo in the app (Settings → Account), and delete your account there at any time. You can also ask us by email for a copy of your data, a correction or deletion. If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can complain to the Data State Inspectorate of Latvia (dvi.gov.lv) or your own country's authority.
Children
MeteoGust is not meant for children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, we update the date above and, for important changes, tell you in the app.
